Deck the Walls with Local Goods this Holiday Season!
by Kevin Nakagawa
On our exploration to discover the creative culture behind the mountain town we call home (Carbondale, CO if you haven't already gotten that) we went straight to the heart of it all, CCAH. Given this festive time of year known for gifts and shopping, it's the perfect timing to feature one of our favorite call to actions: Shop Local!
CCAH, in partnership with an organization called the Dance Initiative, created a local space at the core of downtown Carbondale called The LaunchPad. According to The Launchpad's website, "with a realistic goal of providing a more robust arts experience for creatives of all disciplines, CCAH & Dance Initiative joined forces to bring you The Launchpad."
And they did just that! This place is amazing and is host to an art gallery, studio space for dance, yoga, etc. and a gift shop filled with locally crafted items. As their website accurately boasts: "The Launchpad features two professional grade performing arts studios, a spacious fine art gallery and promenade, and our "Artique": a curious little shop offering unique curated goods....[It also features] the Betty Jane Schuss Memorial Gardens featuring a community garden and "edible forest", small amphitheater, gathering spaces and sculpture garden."
FUN FACT: Did you know that The LaunchPad's stacked windows were made to look like a rocket to honor astronaut Gordon Cooper. That is where the name ‘LaunchPad’ comes from.
We attended a holiday themed event earlier this month at The LaunchPad. The Deck the Walls opening event, hosted by CCAH, turns the R2 Gallery into a shop filled with local and regional artisanal goods, with some items even coming from our very own creative friends and neighbors!
Seeing this room filled with locally made items really hit home in reminding us not only how talented the people all around us are, but how personal shopping local can be. In our small creative district, shopping locally literally supports the people we care about, the livelihood of our town, and our own access to quality items year round.
So as you shop local this holiday season, remember that you are doing so much more than just purchasing any ol' gift, you are standing behind local artists and supporting this creative place we call home.
Deck the Walls will be open for shopping Monday through Friday, 9am to 5:30pm, Thursdays until 6:30pm and Saturdays from 10am to 5pm through December 30th at The LaunchPad.
